Engine Warning Light

This light illuminates when the ignition is switched on. It should go off as soon as the engine starts.

This is probably the most serious warning light. Although it looks like an engine warning light, it sometimes isn't. If it illuminates with the engine running, it indicates a malfunction with the engine management system.

Have this checked as soon as possible.

If this light flashes when driving, reduce the vehicle speed immediately until the light illuminates constantly. If it continues to flash, avoid heavy acceleration and high engine speed, stop the vehicle and have it checked immediately.

With the light illuminated, the vehicle should still be safe to drive as long as no other faults are apparent with the engine. Bring the vehicle to us for diagnostics as soon as possible to avoid any damage being caused to the catalytic converter.

On modern vehicles it may be that your vehicle has now dropped into safe mode. This means that you will have limited drive and acceleration until the vehicle has been inspected and the fault warning system reset.

Oil Warning Light

This light should illuminate when the ignition is switched on and should extinguish as soon as the engine starts.

It is important not to drive if this light is on, it means that for whatever reason the engine is not being lubricated correctly and eventually the moving metal parts will over heat against each other and seize.

If the light stays on after starting or illuminates during a journey, stop immediately, switch off the engine and check the engine oil level. Top up straight away if the level is low.

If the warning lamp illuminates, even though the oil level is correct, do not start the engine and contact us.

Brake Light

This light will remain illuminated when the handbrake is engaged. Illumination after releasing the handbrake may indicate low brake fluid level.

Refer to the handbook and add the correct brake fluid at once to bring the level up to the MAX mark. As the brakes wear the fluid level will slowly drop. Check your brake fluid level frequently to ensure there is no further rapid loss of fluid.

If the light remains illuminated, even though the brake fluid level is correct, this may indicate a sensor fault. Bring your vehicle in as soon as possible.

ABS Light

If your vehicle has this light, it will illuminate briefly when the ignition is switched on to confirm that the system is operational.

If it illuminates when driving, it indicates a malfunction. Have this checked as soon as possible.

Normal braking (without ABS) will continue to function as normal so the vehicle is still safe to drive. However, you should have the vehicle checked by us as soon as possible.

Tyre Tread Warning Light

This indicates that the tyre pressure is low and the tyres need pumping up.

If this problem persists you may have a problem with the tyres so give us a call.

Battery Light

This light should illuminate when the ignition is switched on and should extinguish as soon as the engine starts.

If it does not illuminate at all, or if it illuminates while driving, your battery is not being charged as there is a fault with your charging system.

This may be due to one of the following:

To avoid engine damage, find a safe place to stop and switch off the engine. Do not restart the engine and seek assistance.

Fuel Filter Water Trap (diesel engines)

This light illuminates when the ignition is switched on and should go off after a few seconds.

If it illuminates while driving, it indicates that water has been detected in the fuel filter.

This light warns you that the amount of accumulated water in the fuel filter has reached the specified level.

Normally the vehicle is quite safe to drive, but have the accumulated water in the fuel filter drained off as soon as possible.

If the vehicle has just been re-fuelled, immediately move the vehicle to a safe location and switch off the engine. The fuel may have been contaminated and could cause damage to the injection system. If in doubt, contact us.

Fog Light

This is a red herring. All it means is that you have left your fog lights on!

Fluid Light

This indicates low fluid and you should check your car manual to determine what fluid may need to be topped up.

Seatbelt Light

This indicates that the there is a person in the car not wearing a seatbelt. If this comes on when it shouldn't then there may be a problem with your electrics.

Airbag Light

This light is specific to certain cars and indicates a problem with the airbag. You should seek advice on this as it may mean that your airbag would not inflate in the event of an accident.
